Video: Tyco Video Camera

“This is MY video camera.”
I get asked a lot about my first videos, how I first started and what equipment I had access to.
I was too young to have a video camera, they’re expensive things and I wasn’t considered responsible enough to own one. I wanted a video camera, it was a dream.

Enter “TYCO Video Camera” I remember seeing this advert.

Yes. Get me one of those but they were still expensive, ranging about £70.
Then one day at just the right moment as I just got a bunch of birthday money, someone tipped me off where they were selling a bunch these “VideoCameras” (boxes/instructions were in German) for only £20!

I bought it and that’s where I started.

I only had Saturday mornings to shoot with it because of it being plugged into the family VCR, it meant hogging the front room TV and the front room which was essentially my stage.

I played with stop motion animation by using the record, play and pause buttons on the VCR.

I recorded many things with it and unfortunately, all of them were lost except for one video which I know exists somewhere. So, I am gonna go on a bit of a treasure hunt soon and try and track down a VHS of one of my shorts and hopefully put it online.
